While in the area we took some time to watch Bean Geese, White-fronted Geese, Cranes, and Whooper Swans at the famous roosting lake Tysslingen in Närke. We also heard some Coal Tits and a Grey-headed Woodpecker at Garphyttan National Park but it was apparently too late in the season to hear the wolves howl. And the lynx were invisible of course.
I spent the weekend with fellow painters Gunnar Tryggmo and Peter Elfman delivering some paintings at Galleri Svanen in Närke, a six hours drive from home. The social part of trips like this one is far more important to me than the outcome of the exhibition. Sketch talk is essential for what we do.
Finally I put on some more earth colors for the sand structure and some of the vegetation and a glaze of Prussian blue and Raw sienna over the canopy to make it come alive. Then I turned the painting upside-down, drew a broad brushstroke with clean water across the middle of the sky and added some thick Ultramarine blue in the following ones to strengthen the top of the sky. Then I asked myself if the painting was ready and answered “Yes”, because that’s always the right answer to that question.
Next I added the hut and the vegetation with different mixtures of New gamboge, Ultramarine blue and some earth colors. I also added the shadows, which are a mixture of Ultramarine and Permanent rose. I used different brushstrokes like drybrush, joined-up strokes and calligraphy but I did the whole painting with one single brush - an Escoda Ultimo size 18.
This is the first of three steps to a painting of the sand dunes at Falsterbo. I started with a gradated wash, from Prussian blue with some Ultramarine at the top to a thin mixture of Raw sienna, Burnt sienna, and Ivory black at the bottom. To be continued...
