Darks last. Soft, hard and broken edges and not too detailed for movement and immediacy.

The water had a surrealistic turquoise color enhanced by the contrasting browns. It was constantly moving in big heaves, again contrasted by the solid rocks and lolling seals.

Work in progress 1

Sorry to bore you with another one of these adorable animals, but this blog is about my paintings and this is what I'm painting since our return from Australia. This time I decided to use masking fluid for the first time in a decade, in an attempt to render the incredible sunlight bouncing on the water and the wet rocks and fur seals. I did the seal and the rock in a single wash to connect them.

Sitting woman

My model painting sessions at the beginners' level start with proportions, foreshortenings and balance. Then we add grey for tone values before mixing flesh tones. At the end of the session we skip the pencil and do everything with a brush and paint.

African theme

Today I visited Maria Thorlund's Gallery in Lund, where my friends Thomas Fåhraeus and Peter Elfman had a corner each, among some others. Great art and nice talking!

... with color on it

To a Swedish visitor like myself the sunshine was incredibly strong and came in almost right from above. I had to be bold with the light effects to convey the mood of the scene.
